Avoid turning the heat up in your home unless you have to. If your home is cold, wear warmer clothing, like a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Higher levels of heat use a lot of excess energy!
If you lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees you can save money and be green together. You may save up to 10 percent of your energy costs without sacrificing the temperature of your water. Don’t drink bottled water. Water in bottles is usually just municipal water, and the process of bottling uses a great deal of energy. If you don’t trust your community’s tap water, buy a re-usable water bottle for drinking and use a water filter that you could replace every few months.
Research different sources of green energy available to your community. Checking the costs of running a home with utilities should also include recent legislation about energy costs. For example, you might see a savings if you switch from electricity to natural gas, or even switch from electricity to solar or wind power.
If you have a dishwasher make sure you only run it when it is full. It consumes the exact same amounts of electricity and water even if it’s not full. Make sure you are using the energy saving settings on your dishwasher that will air-dry your dishes.
A front-loading washing machine is a great green choice. They not only require less water usage, but they also clean your clothes better. This saves energy, and consequentially, reduces the amount of money you spend each month. It’s clear that solar panels have lots of benefits to home owners, including cost and energy savings. Best of all it doesn’t take a lot of effort for you to buy and install solar panels for your home. Adding solar panels to your home not only modernizes it, but makes it more environmentally friendly, as well.
A simple way to locate appliances and products that are energy efficient is to see if they have an Energy Star logo. ENERGY STAR appliances meet guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy in addition to the Environmental Protection Agency. Typically, these are the only appliances that one can get a tax rebate for. Try to turn off things you are not using. When you leave a room, switch off the lights, computer or T.V. Power strips are handy, because you can turn a number of devices off with the flip of one switch. If you have a business, you have an idea of how much it costs to power the business with electricity. Consider adding solar panels to your home and be open to discussing these options with friends and neighbors. Many companies have been rewarded by an increase in business because they try to be green. Eventually, the additional business you’ve garnered will offset the cost of solar panels, and you’ll also gain the benefit of decreased utility bills.
